First BGP Seismic Acquisition Workshop at GU National Institution 

An ICV initiative

BGP Oil & Gas Services LLC held its first university level workshop in Oman at the German University (GU) of Technology in Muscat, on February 28th 2023. As part of the ongoing commitment and efforts to support and development of Omani Youth and local communities, the beginning of a collaboration between the two organizations was successfully embarked. 

BGP company arranged for an International technical expert, Mr. Zhou Heng, a Senior Geophysical Specialist from BGP International, to conduct this workshop. A vast number of GU students and staff members attended this event. 

The workshop introduced BGP Oil & Gas Services to the audience and provided an overview of geophysical services the company provides, a fundamental concept of seismic acquisition, the work flow of field seismic operations and the development of seismic acquisition techniques, and finally the way forward where BGP will further establish a network for young graduates to carry out field visits at BGP sites in Oman. 

It is important to emphasize that the German University of Technology provided a platform to facilitate the transition of knowledge and expertise. The workshop was followed with an open dialogue with the representatives of BGP about the future direction of the exploration and most importantly Oil & Gas market and encouraged students to start thinking about future technologies. Planting the seeds of research and development was key and a great opportunity. The type of motivation all parties experienced has given hope and stimulated enthusiasm to those who will be tomorrow’s leaders in the geophysical, seismological field in the Oil & Gas Sector; the movers and shakers. 

The significance of the workshop was contributing to the development of local institutions (an In-Country Value Element), visually illustrating the practical side of the education received in a university setting, and commencing a long term collaboration. Subsequently the immense feedback from students confirmed this achievement. The General Manager of BGP, Mr. Tian Jianhui, stated that this is only the beginning and looks forward to further collaborations with the local institutions to develop the In Country wealth to a sustainable growth of Sultanate of Oman.
